Hey Everyone, As the outdoor riding season is coming to a close I'm sure most of you are thinking of winter training for the 2012 season! I’m sure a number of you are thinking about a several ways to keep up and improve your fitness by cross training and building strength whether it is by weight lifting, climbing, skiing or spinning classes etc. I know Fruits was trying to incorporate crossfit like workouts into some of the training schedules you guys had so thought there might be some interest! A new crossfit gym has opened up in the south end, and there is a 15% discount for students and teams of 3 people. Since I’m not a student I was hoping to get a group of 3! I think it would be super fun to go 1 or 2x a week and switch up the training a bit! As most of you are students and have the semester student bus pass – getting to the gym wouldn’t be a problem since the #51 goes right by it. There are a few different pricing options I was considering (depending on whether or not anybody had any interest in doing this with me). Let me know if this is something you’d want to do! Here’s the website if you wanted to check it out! www.gridironcrossfit.com/

Fruits and I were thinking along the same lines but instead we are thinking of running workouts throughout the winter at the UoG gym possibly.
Its tempting to go back to an actual crossfit gym and do some WODS again but the $$$ to do that keep me in my garage doing my own workouts lol
If we do run any workouts it will be during next semester.

CF is pricey...but worth it!!! Man after 4 years of waiting for equipment at that place I can't do it anymore, esp if there is a group of us going (i.e. more than 1) it'll be impossible to get WODs running smoothly/at all unless you go at 6am.

Hey, I was just checking this out too.
I'm pretty tempted, but I'd have to see what their gym offers before signing up. The rates also look pretty steep on their site (about double what I've paid in the past fof crossfit training).
I wouldn't mind going to check it out, and I'd definitely recommend crossfit training to everyone else on the team. The performance gains are far superior than anything you'll get from working out on machines.
I'd have to look into it but there may be a more affordable option on campus. The athletic club doesn't have the necessary facilities for this kind of training, but the football steadium sure does. If there is interest I could contact coach Mumford (the team's trainer) and see if he would be willing to take on a class of athletes and what the associated costs would be. Not many people were allowed using our gym other than the team, but I did see him coaching some of the girl's basketball players and the odd high school student so that could be a possibility too. I'll check into it if anyone wants to do some real serious training!

This gym just opened early this October - so I think that's why the prices are a higher and the class times may not match those of CF gyms in cities outside Guelph. It's a clean space and is heated (unlike some CF gyms in the Guelph area). There will be a number of changes in the coming months but it's typical for any CF gym starting out - all the basics are there.

LOL crossfit gyms do not need a lot of heating! You are usually sweating your balls off half way through a work out... Anyway we are going to look into getting a back room or something at the UoG gym, we are aware of how unaccessible equipment is and how crowded it is.

Do CrossFit! It's SO GREAT! Just did a crossfit competition on the weekend at the on on Dawson, although its not going to overly benefit cardio - it's great for overall strength and fitness! I highly recommend it, also just so you guys know: The running club is running a bootcamp every Thurs night from 530 - 630 incorporating agility, strength and really emphasizing total body while keeping your heart rate up! So far its been going on on Johnston Green, but in the next week or two we are moving it into the gym!
Chris Tsiaskos is running it (VP of Running Club) he has been leading group runs from Lululemon for months now and also competes at a high level in Crossfit so his exercises are awesome!
IT's free right now, but when we move in the gym if we can't get the funding we are going to have to charge (gym rental is $25 / hour but we have had 6- 10 people coming so it might only be $2 each).
If you want more information let me know! It's just a cheap/free easy way to fit in a total body workout.

Im suprised no one has done any bashing of crossfit on this thread yet....it wasnt recieved well in the "workout" thread last January.
Shannon I agree crossfit is great for overall fitness but for anyone trying it for the first time you should not go crazy on your first WOD(Workout of the Day). A lot of the movements and exercises are difficult to do properly which can lead to straining or hurting yourself (especially if you start incorporating olympic weightlifting).
This is because you will want to do them as fast as possible in the WODs and consequently you will never learn how to properly do for example a squat or pull up or kettlebell swing which can lead to some serious hurt.
So keep a level head everyone as we progress through the winter and you start to get antsy for an intense workout!

Definitely agree there Alex - you CAN seriously hurt yourself in Crossfit, but remember you can hurt yourself mountain biking too! hehe jk! but yea, start slow - with ANY strength training program, especially you harcore cyclists who NEVER work out besides ride ur bikes for 4 hours a day.. hehe....

Hey, I'm thinking of getting into Xfit for the next few months. Any suggestion on where to start? If your thinking of doing crossfit like workouts on your own, I would def recommend on learning how to do lifts properly (i.e. deadlifts, squats, cleans etc.) Many crossfit WODs include power lifts such as those and when it's balls to the walls and you're reaching the point of exhaustion, that's where form suffers and injury occurs, esp if you have little to no experience with weights. And without someone watching your form yelling at you when your doing it wrong, the chance of injury increases. I'm pretty sure that most CF gyms have a "training camp" like thing to teach new members the foundations of the movements and exercises you'll be doing, which is great. Once you've finished this then you'll be free to start going to the classes.

If your starting on your own and lets say you look up workouts online just reduce the reps within them till you get comfortable.

Last year I was going to the gym consistently, and this year I'm just getting back into it. The only thing is; I HATE the general slog of lifting weights, so I thought crossfit might add something to make it a little interesting. Not to mention I've lost most of the strength I gained last year.
I'm already a member at the athletic club, so I dont want to join another gym. But if there is something happening (for the cheap) on campus, I'll give it a try.

Just so that everybody knows, November and Dec are considered 'off' months. So you want to be focusing on things like core and flexibility more than absolute strength. January is pre-season so that's when you will be looking for the gains.

Andrew, why not just challenge yourself more when you lift weights? Instead of trying to lift more, try to do your workout faster, time yourself and push yourself that way... No need to pay someone 200 bucks for 20 sessions to tell you the same thing ...
