lights are more of a guideline than a requirement..

If you're looking at doing some mtb night riding than i suggest you get a good head lamp (bar mounted wont be enough), which if you are on a tight budget, is hard to find...

In my experience, having both a helmet mount and a bar mount is best, but expensive. I'd recommend just a helmet mount for a tight budget. A helmet mount allows you to direct the light where you want it, whereas a bar mount is restricted to just the direction the bars are aiming it. Jet Lites from Nevada has some great products, they won a bunch of awards, and their prices are reasonable. I got an entire set up (light, battery, charger, helmet mount) for $300, and the light is comparable to some much more expensive lights. On the contrary, a strong flashlight, some duct tape, and McGuyvering a head lamp isn't impossible...
Also, I'm always down for a night ride, provided conditions are acceptable.

Buy this.. Minewt 200Ive raced several 24hr events with a minewt. If you plan on racing, then DEFINITELY get a bar and head lamp, as youll need it for depth perception. If you're just riding casually, you can get away with just a helmet light.

Is 200 lumen enough to race at night?

If you're planning on night riding, a headlamp is nice to have. Bar mounted to supplement if need be.
I have a headlamp I bought two years ago that doesn't get any use, and I'd like to get rid of it. Ill look up what the lumens are, but I'd sell it for $80. You wouldnt need a bar mount with it.

Is 200 lumen enough to race at night? Id say its adequate. Ive raced with just a 200lumen headlight, as well as a full HID setup. The HID is nice, but I woudnt say it allows you to go faster overall. Especially in Ontario where the descents are tame and short.

I've raced about a million (give or take) laps at 24 hour races, if you have the option get a helmet mount light. I have one that I would part with, but I don't have the charger for it. I always get away with using either demos at the races or charges that they supply.

These are pretty much the staple of low budget but awesome output bike lights; www.pinkbike.com/buysell/578166/Do some searching on Magicshine 900 and you'll see what I mean - I use a NiteRider 1200lumen light, and its way too bright on full power - 900 is perfect IMO after riding with people using the Magicshine setup.
