Hey Gang,
In the wake of recent fatal cycling accidents in the area and the growth in the number of cyclists taking to the streets for transport and recreation, there is rising cause for greater rider safety, awareness and education in the Guelph community at large. Some of us like minded cyclist types have chatted via FaceBook today and this is what we came up with for Saturday's ride (we can make additions/adaptations as we get closer to the date):
Saturday’s Slow Ride
A slow community bike ride to honour lives lost while biking,
To support each other,
To display our need for safer streets
Meet at 12pm in St. George’s Square.
There we will write the names of cyclists who have been killed onto strips of white fabric and tie these white fabric streamers onto our handlebars.
We will begin the ride at 12:30pm.
Route: St. George’s Square to the University of Guelph campus.
In the centre of campus we will tie our white streamers onto the branches of the tree beside the cannon.
If you would like to bring other things for people to attach to their bikes (bells, lights, flowers), please do.
As some have already mentioned, the idea is for the ride to be slow, peaceful, thoughtful. To honour the fallen cyclists. All together, with our streamers, we won't need to take up the entire street to make our presence known. Biking in the bike lanes, with bike helmets and lights, we will show our desire to share the road, safely.
Current route plan:
