Hey Guys,
I know this is a bit early to be talking about races BUT I'd like to do some this year and I know I'll be in a bind on how to get to them (I don't have a car).
Are there any ladies (cat 3) thinking about hitting up some road races this year or possible cat 4/3 men?
I realize that sometimes it may be a last min decision on whether to actually do a race for some of you but, I need carpooling options and I need to know that I'll have a way of racing this year! I've listed a few of the races I'm thinking of doing below (it's pretty much all of them now, that will go down when I get cold feet or if the weather forecast is super shitty):
Let me know if there is anyone willing to drive/do any of these!
Good Friday Road Race - Friday, April 6th Calabogie Classic - Sunday, April 22nd Tour of Bronte - Sunday, April 28th Springbank Crit - Sunday, May 6th Niagara Classic - Sunday, May 20th KW Classic - Sunday, Jun 10 Tour de Waterloo - Sunday, Jun 24th le Tour de Terra Cotta - Monday, Aug 6th Tour Di Via Italia - Sunday, Sep 2nd Tour De Hans - Sunday, Sep 29

It's never too soon to talk about racing. That said, doubtful I'll be road racing this year,

I'll likely be doing all of the above with the possible exceptions of Bronte and Terra Cota. I'll be living in Guelph this summer so if you want a ride, let me know.

Gah - I've been looking at the results for the Good Friday race from last year and the W Elite 3 averaged 32.0 km/h (for 55 km)... with first place finishing at 1h 43' 59" and last place finishing at 2h 21' 22"....
How does that compare to races you've done?

Just remember that in road races there is a lot of drafting involved. Unless you are at the very front (or in a bad place during a crosswind), you will be doing very little work to maintain that pace.
I don't think you would have any problem with keeping up - in fact I think you could do quite well. But I would suggest riding the course at least once before the actual race.

Um...well I'm cat 2...so I have no idea. I don't race with a speedometer, just cadence and heart rate. But 55km is really short...that is like junior race short. I believe for most of my races we averaged 33+ for 80-95km. But I was more in shape last year...

In the spirt of meme-hilarity... Buttt in all seriousness, Andrew thanks for the confidence boost, I sure hope your right I guess we'll see how well this winter's training worked! And Kaylynn, thanks for your input! Here's hoping I can keep up with junior riders!

speed is a distraction in a road race...it can really screw with you. It doesn't matter how fast you are going as long as it is as fast or faster than everybody else.

How does that compare to races you've done? As Andrew said, I think you'll be fine. Although the speed might be faster that you usually ride during training rides, being in the pack really does help-- so it won't feel as fast as it is. It does speed up and slow down during the race, (eg over the hills people hammer, and the let up sometimes during the flat parts), so doing some intervals prior to race season will help you there. ...but honestly, you were riding strongly at the end of last summer, and if you're training through the winter I think you'll be fine for race season!

So who is going to the good friday road race?? Alberta just decided to down grade all female cat 1/2 riders not on the national team to cat 3 (lowest category in Alberta for women is 5)...so if I race I will be racing senior 3.

Are there even enough participants out in Alberta to spread across 5 categories?

just checked past results. There most definitely isn't. You'll be fine in S3 Kaylynn, itll probably compare equally with s2 out west.

I'm not worried about that...53km is pretty sweet. I'm used to racing 1/2, but it doesn't really matter for the first race. Basically, Alberta just has A and B races for Women, I still race A in Alberta...but I guess not in Ontario!
