Hey Roadies, here's some motivation for you to spend some time on your trainer.
Date : Apr 14, 2006 Race Type : Road Event : Good Friday Road Races Location : Guelph Promoter: Hamilton Cycling Club Description: The 3km loop is flat with a rise in the road to the finish. With only 2 corners, the course is technically easy. Perfect for an early season race.
I think the distance for the Senior 3 race is about 40 km. Every roadie I know had better be there.

Sounds good! Everyone with a road bike who comes through the bike center before then will hear about it.
And where is Hanlon Park? is it closed roads too?

Do you get many roadies coming through the bike centre? Do you need more volunteers? I'd like to put in several hours a week.
The Hanlon Park is in the south end of Guelph near the Hanlon. The name of the streets fail me, but I'll show you the rough area once we can out on our road bikes. The roads are closed for the day of the race. It's only a short loop on roads that should have very little to no traffic on a holiday.

There's not to many road riders that come through the bike center compared to the number of commuter type ppl, but enough. That'll change with time, as the bc gets more well known - if you have a road bike you can't help working on it all the time so its good to have a place.
Also i think i saw you at Franks friday?

And about volunteering - we love volunteers, but during the winter its so slow that more open hours would be absolutely dead for whoever was there.
If things pick up enough before the end of the year and we need volunteers again i'll definetely let you know.

Hey Bayden,
You did see me at Frank's on Friday! That was a good night.
I totally understand you not needing any more volunteers this time of year. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on the opportunity.

Michelle, website: www.hamiltoncycling.com/calendar.htmAnd Joel (or anyone else) Ya ravi is still doing the bike center, and you can totally get some hours. (Hugh you can too anytime you want, just be considered warned of the unpredictable slowness during cold months). You can drop Ravi a line whenever you want or i'll keep it mind for whenever traffic picks up.

ill be showin up to unimpress the masses on friday in the hammer. ill be the one looking to suck as many wheels as possible ... heh ... if paris to ancaster is any indication its back to the drawing board in terms of training. or maybe ... learning how to ride a bike.
but yeah. im goin.
how are you and hugh gettin down? i can most likely get a big ass truck ... that sucks back enough gas to make you want to cry. but ... otherwise i might drive myself down in a neon ... heh. only room for 1 bike really. hit me back so we can maybe work something out ...

I went to bed last night all excited for the race today. However, I awoke to a huge knot in my gut at about 6am. Instantly, I thought I have the exact same virus, that Christy had last Saturday, that prevented us from doing Paris-Ancaster.
Hence, no racing for me today, as I have been puking all day long. Shitty buzz.
Let's here the scoop from Chris and Tim.

Well here is the race recap:
1st lap - fast!~ announcer said we had the fastest lap of the day so far.
2nd lap pretty chill, tim and I rode together for a bit
3rd lap... somehow I end up in a break away that was very short lasted, then stayed at the front of the peleton for a bit.
4th lap.. didn't realize how much effort I was putting in at the front.. I'm pretty dead but get back in a sweet draft..
... then tim ends up at the front for a while no sure what lap that was on...
and then the 8th lap.. I'm in the pack just a little ahead of Tim... everyone is getting aggressive .. I almost crashed big time from some guy putting his front wheel into mine on a climb.
I'm still ahead of tim just by a touch and then on the final climb some guy loses his legs right in front of me and like stops pedalling almost I get totally boxed in and like 15 people pass including tim who finished strong in what seemed like the top 20 for sure, but not sure of the results yet.
All in all a good ride, we need hugh to recover from his virus and get some team tatics going next time.
It was a sweet first race. I will see if I can find pictures on their website and post them.
I'm addicted but it was annoying seeing some unfit riders there and still doing well! So next time doing an 0-cup I hope.

yeah, thats how she went down ... frustrating having no one willing to work with you to chase down a break.
i went to work on the fifth lap but ... no one wants to pull through ... everyone seems content with best of the rest ... which is fine i guess ...
hugh, get yer butt to the next one. between the three of us and the 2 or 3 other guys i know (who are definitely strong) we wont have to rely on the wolves ... and we can hopefully create some results for ourselves!!
after chris got boxed in (i was lucky, i got boxed earlier and broke out of it ...) i was able to move up in the standings pretty good ... i had a friend at the finish who guessed a top 15 for me ... but when the top 20 came out ... im nowhere to be found. confusing and a little disappointing but. thats racing!
and yeah, to echo chris ... its not nice seeing people who are far less fit sitting in and getting results. but its racing.

c'mon.....
thats the kind of attitude that deters me from trying road racing. the 'politics and ethics'. I can sure as hell tell you that at 5'8 and 165lb I wont be leading the group at any point in time.. My only hope of doing well is sitting in and beating the 'fitter' guys at the sprint.
Fact of the matter, unfit or fit, they finished ahead of you, and i tip my helmet to them. As long as they didnt stick their frame pump in your wheels, they earned their finish.
my humble opinions, Aaron

allow me to clarify ... well, and not ... it can definitely be annoying to have the fitness but not have the race savvy ... as i said. thats racing ... fitness is only one component ... i have some of that ... but not the savvy or know how.
and by annoying i did not tear these people down or say they were any less of a cyclist ... i merely said its annoying. just as it would be annoying having someone clog up every climb, and keep the pace slow, only to excel on the downhill/tech sections and place ahead of you in a mtb race ... annoying. frustrating. but thats racing.
but to clarify ... having the people who didnt put in the work almost causing accidents as they shoot their rear wheel back on climbs, suddenly dropping speed as if jamming on the breaks at the base of a climb ... and on ... is frustrating as hell ... someone who has the know how to sit in the pack or to grab a wheel but makes it sketchy for people who can keep the pace the whole time ... thats annoying ... and mildly dangerous ... ask chris about the guy who was banging into him in the last climb.
ethics and attitude of road cycling to me are part and parcel. you want to be in the pack ... you should be able to shoulder the workload ...
but at the same time technique and finesse are also part of it ... the ability to shirk work to save energy is an equally important part of road cycling. annoying. but thats racing.
that is my humble opinion.

whoa, that sounded snarky. sorry about that aaron ... just a little tired and hungry at the time... i just ate though just tryin to make sure you didnt think i was complaining about others (well, except the dodgy people) but i was more frustrated with myself (ie. had the fitness, didnt have the skills) ... sorry about the rantiness of that last post. heh. im so tempermental.

Way to represent guys - even if it was a dicey finish. How many riders started in the sen.3? If i can muster up the time between jobs and school to get fast i'll be there next year. I'll ride with like 10 waterbottles and spare tires, be the 'domestique'.

I think there were around 50-60 guys that started in the senior 3. It sure seemed pretty large.
There was only 1 major crash that I witnessed.
It was a good course, hills were nothing big.
40km flew by like nothing.

good job boys!
for crash-worthy highlights, should have seen nascar today. bigtime, the girlfriends even fought after. and "unskilled riders" make a race what it is. a course of fit and skilled riders is only for tv... i like to see the ability to work around the sh!ttiest pack and adapt to that sort of thing. i guess i like carnage, much like nascar...
also, how do they rank road races? is senior 3 above or below senior 2?
