That's too bad about the classification, Tim. I think it is really really hard to place 50-some guys accurately without timing equipment. Really, only the places finishing in the points are necessary. Here's a pic that shows Chris (yellow helmet about 2/3 of the way back): www.canadiancyclist.com/races06/ON/APR14/pages/S3_DSC0018.htmAnd, ya Bayden, don't get me going on the timing of my illness...

Ya Tim. .. DNF thats annoying. I would say you were probally 10-15th. Sure wish I didn't get caught in traffic but it's only a crit race.
Next time need to be closer to the front with a lap or two to go for sure. Glad my mavic open pro wheels survived after that guy swerved into me. His quick release must have bounced off my spokes, sure made quite the noise. My wheel is still perfectly true so all is well.
Not sure what the next race will be yet.

One question...given the strategic dynamics of cat 3 racing are amiss.. is it possible to do well by just hammering alone?

DNF? that's crazy, I had that happen to me during a citizan's race back in the day before they invested in chip timing. I thank all the volunteers that run these races, without them we`d have nothing. I totally agree that's racing. You definatly earn your way up the ranks and different classes by fitness AND your ability to ride a race. I had stuff like that happen to me when I tried some Ocup racing a couple seasons ago, at least in road racing there is a little more opportunity to pass. In mtb racing most of the passing is done on hills or double track. Sadly, if a pack doesn't know how to ride a hill and they swarm you and get off - forcing you who can ride it to get off... well then you're screwed. I can tollerate a couple people in a race doing that, but man when it's like 20 people and it sets the tone for the whole race.... i dunno it turned me right off and i decided this style of racing was not something I wanted to do. It's not to say there hasn't been hills in a race where I`ve gotten stuck and forced people off behind me, it can happen to anyone Just keep common curtisy if someone behind you is yelling rider through and your off and they're not.... move off to the side and let them through. Encourage them up that hill if you want - that's the true comradery of sport. I throughly enjoy it when people return the favour, smiles all around. Good job in the race guys, you did well!

if you are strong enough to hammer alone ... yes ... it is possible.
the best way to ride s3 ... according to my cronies who went through it much quicker than i will ... is ...
sit in the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the pack ... watch your placing in the corners so in the last lap you know where to be and when ... dont do any unecessary work ... and just wait to the end.
personally, i think ill just stick with not playing it safe. if we can scrounge up enough guys to work hard (hugh, chris ... a bunch of guys i know through the shop) we can set our own tone of the race.
i guess the only thing that disappoints me is that you wont get better if you always play it safe ... personally i think taking fliers and breaking off the front... taking risks ... will make you a far stronger cyclist. and it makes it so much more exciting ... pulling a group of 60 guys along a stretch is strangely exciting. i mean, damn, its exciting to try and claw back a break ... hammering down a stretch ... you can almost pretend you are pro ... hahahah.
so. anyways aaron ... the guy who one ... broke off with another guy, said to this individual, i will pull you the whole way if you dont try to take me in the sprint ... the agreement was made and he proceeded to tt at 40km/h for the majority of the race by himself. not too shabby. hahah ... but man ... you GOTS to be really strong!!
as to the DNF ... im a little cheesed still. now that i think of it ... im thinking of it in money terms. i paid 45 dollars to enter a race in which my results would be monitored. they didnt do their job ... so i feel a little cheated. but thats life and there is more to life than a little race in southern ontario ... heh.

Just out of curiosity, what was the average speed for the 40km? I don't really know the first thing about road racing, but i guess that's where all the 'strategy' I hear about comes into play. Good to see so many people getting out there... Is that a Guelph Jersey I see?

Oh of course its a Guelph Jersey! Hugh was planning on wearing his too.
And the average speed was a touch over 40km/hr. We finished in 59 minutes over the 40km course. And the pace was all over the map, sometimes we were barley moving. And around corners the train effect would slow everyone at the back of the pack down big time and then we would have to sprint out of the corner to keep up.
It's quite the rush!
Hey tim, I lucked out on getting to attend a fast 13km time trial tomorrow with a friend in the Brampton club. I am addicted to this stuff already!

hey chris ... get this. So i sent them a fairly pleasent email (hamilton cycling club) telling them what went down etc etc... and this is what i get. "All resulrs were posted at finish line shortly after each race. Additionally results are posted on our club web site. www.hamiltoncycling.comYou are recorded as a DNF for the Senior 3 race...so in that sense you did not place. In order to place you would have had to complete the race." I mean. not to try and flog a dead horse but fuck. the bastards wont even admit that they made a friggin mistake. URGH. talk about jackasses. jackasses. hahah . anyways. im through flogging this horse ... but a note to everyone. hamilton cycling club = douche bags

thats brutal. what a bunch of a-holes... chico and sean would never pull this!
do they still use dumb little paper numbers to identify you or was there a decent way to record your finish?

some were paper ... some were cloth ...
yeah, ive heard nothing but good things about chico.
my housemate grew up down the road from those guys and says they are damn solid.
and the guys i work with have nothing but respect for them too. maybe ill give up road racing and go to mtb racing.
i just got the new bike but damn ... its no fun setting up the mc3 and the sid and the poploc ... i just want to ride dammit!!! hahah ...
hows the 110 treating you? bit nicer than the 98 (rip)?
we should find as many people with topfuels (and damn, there appears to be a few of us) and do a gang ride. we can call it ... well, i dont know....
the privileged white kids on bikes worth more than your car gang.
hows that sound?

hahahah "insurance is the only way i can afford my bike club"
i used to have the fuel 100, so the frame is essentially the same. but the suspension makes a world of difference, going from the sid shock to mc3r is like butter vs. I can't believe its not butter. and i wont even start on the fork. anyways, if anyone would like to join this exclusive club, message me about buying a trek fuel frame/crank/wheel combo. 19.5"

i took the fuel out yesterday ... in its state of not really set up at all properly but whateverness ... and even then ... it crushed what i was riding before. i mean ...
marzocchi exr supra (80 billion lbs and a steel steerer) vs. sid team rock shox bar (hahahahah) vs. mc3r 8 billion lb. element 30 frame vs. disgustingly light carbon frame.
i covet your race x lite wheels. they are veddy nice.
yeah. hehe. how about ...
osap pimped my ride
